Week 1: Social Media

Social media is a highly controversial topic in today’s society.  Every day there are stories on the news about the advantages and disadvantages of social media.  For instance, the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” has recently made national headlines with the help of social media.  Besides helping organizations advertise  and raise money, other advantages of social media include helping people stay connected with friends, family, classmates, etc., it helps provide opportunities for people and businesses, and it helps people stay up-to-date with news.  Although there are countless advantages of social media, there are also multiple disadvantages.  For example, people can embarrass themselves or lose their jobs because of what they post on social media sites, much of the information found on social media sites is not true, and many people argue that social media has made it much more difficult for people to talk to other people in person.  While I believe social media is a useful tool, I think it is also important that people limit the amount of time they spend on social media sites and protect themselves from being harmed from social media.
