The Determinants of NBA Season Attendance: A Pooled Data Model

Dan is senior at Marietta College double majoring in Finance and Economics. Throughout his time at college, Dan has collected four varsity letters under the men’s soccer program. Currently, Dan is exploring his options on what do after graduation. His immediate plans include backpacking trip across the country with friends. Eventually, however, he wishes to continue his education.

Dan’s paper is titled “The Determinants of NBA Season Attendance: A Pooled Data Model”.Because of his background in sports, Dan has always been interested in finding out what attracts people to professional sporting events. This interest has driven him to build a regression model that estimates the effects of various factors on the NBA total season attendance for each team. To estimate his regression model Dan uses a cross-sectional data set on 26 NBA teams over the course of two seasons: 2001-2002 & 2007-2008.

Dan presents his capstone paper.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the determinants of total season attendance for the NBA. The regression model is estimated using a pooled data set from 26 NBA teams during two seasons; 2001-2002 and 2007-2008. Among all the explanatory variables considered, winning percentage and the size of the arena have proven to be the only significant variables. This paper is relevant for administrators within a team organization attempting to increase annual attendance and will have important business implications.
