Factors Affecting the Suicide Rate in the United States: A Regression Analysis

Yuan is an international student who has transferred from China. He has been studying at Marietta College for 2 years, and loves his life here. He says “Every single year I spent here makes me to be more independent and more mature.”

Yuan is a senior majoring in finance. After graduation, he hopes to be able to find a job in a financial institution in New York. While working, he will also study for GMAT as he plans to continue his education and receive a master’s degree.

Yuan’s paper is titled “Factors Affecting the Suicide Rate in the United States: A Regression Analysis”. His empirical research focuses on the determinants of suicide rate in the US. More specifically, Yuan looks at the effects of variables such as the unemployment rate, the divorce rate, the firearms ownership rate, and the per capita alcohol consumption on the variation in the suicide rate across the fifty states.

Yuan presents his capstone paper.

Abstract

This study explores the effects of various factors on the suicide rate in the U.S. The empirical model is estimated using the OLS procedure and a cross-sectional data set across the fifty states and the District of Columbia in 2006. The estimation results show that the divorce rate, the percentage of population that is male, as well as the percentage of population with a high school or higher academic degrees have a positive and significant effect on the suicide rate. On the other hand, per capita income has a negative and significant effect on the suicide rate. My study did not find a significant correlation between alcohol consumption, race, gun ownership, unemployment rate, age, poverty rate and the suicide rate.
